'Harris Tweed' production process which is applied to Chesterfield furniture (source: Wikipedia)
The creation of Harris Tweed begins with fleeces of pure virgin wool shorn from Cheviot and Scottish Blackface sheep. Although most wool is sourced mainly on the British mainland, the island communities still come together in early summer to gather and shear the local sheep to add to the mix. The two types of wool are blended to gain the benefits of their unique qualities and characteristics.
This is then scoured and delivered in large bales to the factories of the major tweed producers, where it is then dyed in a wide range of colours.
The freshly dyed coloured and white wool are weighed in pre-determined proportions and thoroughly hand-mixed to exact recipes to attain the right hue. It is then carded between mechanical, toothed rollers. The soft yarn that emerges is given a twist as it is spun to give maximum strength for weaving. The spun yarn is wound onto bobbins and delivered to the weavers.
All genuine Harris Tweed is hand-woven. Dirt, oil and other impurities are removed by washing and beating in soda and soap water before it is dried, steamed, pressed and cut.
Finally, the independent Harris Tweed Authority, who visits the factories weekly, applies the Orb Mark trademark to the fabric as a seal of authenticity.
